Essay on Decisions for Library it Systems

Brief History of Library Automation
Libraries have had some level of automated processes and services since the latter part of the 1960s. Early systems were mainframe-based and batch-oriented, generally supporting only the generation of flat lists. Punched cards were the primary input and update mechanism for databases, which were stored on 9-track tape.

In the late 1960s, the first key "enabling technology," the MARC format, was developed. The Machine Readable Cataloging data format was developed by the Library of Congress to provide standardized, machine-readable description of bibliographic data through the use of tagged fields and sub-fields. It maintained data storage and data exchange between systems and provided the foundation for development of library automation applications. This new format made possible the creation of large shared bibliographic "utilities" which allowed libraries to contribute data to common databases and to obtain standard format records for shared cataloging.

With the development of the minicomputer in the early to mid-1970s, a few interactive automated library systems began to develop. The progress in the mid- to late 1970s was toward development and implementation of separate data processing applications to control each major function in libraries, sometimes with a mix of vendor products and locally developed systems. These applications were mainly for online circulation control, however a few separate acquisitions systems were also developed during this period. At the same time as several commercial library automation vendors did appear in the mid-1970s, most of these early data applications were developed on college and university campuses and were not licensed for use beyond the campus that created them. If several functions were automated using these early single-purpose applications, the library needed to keep duplicate sets of data. For case in point, separate data sets would have to be created and maintained for acquisitions control, for circulation control, and for public access to the library's holdings...........
