People often gripe about dropped cell phone calls and confusing monthly bills. But that sure hasn't stopped them from using wireless phones.
Statistics show that by the end of 2004, the number of wireless subscribers in the USA surpassed 180.5 million, up 21.7 million from 2003, according to estimates to be unveiled by CTIA, the wireless trade association. In sheer numbers, that makes 2004 the second-highest-growth year for the industry. Annual wireless-service revenue topped $102 billion.

The figures are being released as CTIA (formerly the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association) kicks off its annual wireless industry gathering in New Orleans.
Today, more than 60% of Americans are using a wireless device to talk, send e-mail, take pictures, watch video and listen to music. It's not just a phone; it's a lifestyle tool.

For all of the phones’ newfangled capabilities, gabbing remains the No. 1 activity for subscribers. Wireless voice minutes exceeded 1.1 trillion in 2004, compared with 29 billion minutes 10 years ago. But text messaging is also on the upswing. Monthly short-message services (SMS) passed 4.6 billion messages — more than double the 2003 figure and more than 300 times the total at the end of 2000. The catalyst: Carriers fixed a problem that formerly prevented one carrier's phone from sending text to a different carrier’s handset.

Other notable statistics have showed that Wireless carriers employed 226,000 people in 2004, a 10% increase over the year before. The industry also spent nearly $174 billion in capital investments.   The average local monthly bill climbed 1.5% to $50.64 last year, and customer usage swelled 15%.

Cell phone usage is still a lot cheaper than in the early days. By comparison, the monthly tab in December 1987 was $96.83...........
