Essay on Alzheimer's Disease
My grandmother’s battle
with Alzheimer’s disease and how it affected me
She used to take care of me when my mom worked. She was very nurturing and
always made me feel special. My memories of my grand mother include her either
cleaning the house in a skirt or cooking. Her house had a distinct smell I will
never forget, it smelled like mothballs and pine sol. she always mad people
laugh with her sense of humor. She used to call me Gigi. I would always dance on
her tile floor. She would always yell at me and say she would hit me with her
wooden spoon. I could talk to her about almost everything.
I noticed when she first got the disease she started to change, her personality
and mood would change in a second. She went into a nursing home where I visited
her regularly, she always gave pride in the way she looked, and would be
devastated to see how she looked in the nursing home. Though it was depressing
going to visit her, knowing she wouldn't know that you came to visit at all but
it made me happy just to know I was there.
I feel lucky to have had the experience of
serving my dearest grandmother and to have all of those sweat memories. My
holidays will never be the same without her and her Italian cooking.
