Essay on Death in Parts

In my childhood I heard some one saying, “death is a relief if it comes suddenly”. For me it was a normal thing as death is always sudden and that is why I was unable to understand the meaning of this phrase. For a little while I thought if there is any death that is not sudden or either planned. It was not until the day when I heard of the plight of the passengers of the United Airlines flight number 93 that crashed in the World Trade Tower on September 11, 2001.

Oh! That was death but a death in parts!
Everyone on board was at once aware and unaware of his fate. Each passenger was under a spell of confusion and hanging in between a situation of belief and disbelief, of hope and disappointment. The story started on Tuesday morning of September 11, 2001. The Boeing 757 of the United Airlines scheduled at 8.01 a.m. from Newark to San Francisco was unexpectedly late. The plane took off and all on board started waiting for the time they would at their destinations. Alas! None of them knew what destiny they are heading towards. Yes---there were few on board who did know. They were from entirely different origin, different features and spoke different language. Still nobody noticed it. Everyone on board, from cabin crew to passengers were busy in their own way and nobody ever expected anything unusual. When the plane was at cruising altitude, a message for the pilots appeared on the monitor saying "cockpit intrusion". Although the passenger came to know when three of the hijackers stood up with red bandanas around their heads and two of them forced their way into the cockpit. A sudden wave of shock entered the surroundings and everybody was frozen in his place. A few moments back everyone on board was in a cheerful mood but everything seemed to have doomed in seconds. The whispers of omen were entering everyone’s ears. A sheer cloud of confusion blurred the scene. Even the heartbeat could be heard in the silence of death. And the count down started---not for landing but for death. Oh! What sort of death it was--- a death in parts, coming in intervals. Every second seemed like a million hours. The hijackers carrying sharp-edged knife looked like butchers and they had already slaughtered a passenger. The rest were waiting for their turns and no one knew who’s going to be the next! It was a strange feeling. Seemed as if time was moving fast whereas death was approaching slow. Death in parts and the last and final part, the drop scene, end of the drama at 10.06 a.m. the plane lost the contact with the radar and all those on board with this mortal world!!!
