Registered nurses promote health,
prevent disease and help the patients to cope with illness. The nurses are
advocates and health educators for patients, families and communities. They
observe, asses and record the symptoms, reactions and progress of a patient.
They also assist other physicians during treatments and examinations. They
also help the patients in their rehabilitation. All of these are the jobs of
a registered nurse while the hospital nurses are also provide nursing care
and carry out the jobs in the hospitals. Most of the times these nurses are
assigned only one field as a time.
In a managed care environment, health
promotion for the adolescent and to provide proper care with the present
facility and all the alternative health which is possible should be utilized
for the adolescent as, their safety and care are much more important to take
care of. Due to abuse of alcohol and tobacco they have more chances to
contracting other fatal diseases as compared to other habits. All due
research in this regard should be carried out so that all the secrets are
open and each and everyone is aware of the proper treatment in case of any
emergency occur. In case of emergency or anything going wrong the nurses,
parents or anyone taking care of the patient should know how to treat the
patient as an emergency patient. The nurses usually have a direct contact
with the concerned hospital, but in case the nurse is not available that at
least the one who is working in the place of the nurse should have a direct
contact with the hospital and the patient should get emergency treatment
before any real emergency occurs.
Nurse has a very heavy responsibility over her or his shoulders. When the
nurse is taking care of an adolescent or teenager as a patient, than it is
the responsibility of the nurse to obtain medical histories, perform medical
expiations which are authorized to a nurse, diagnose and recommend the
diagnosis to the proper doctor. If in the initial stage the adolescent is
found to be having a chronic case of disease due to tobacco, or alcohol that
that particular patient should be given special care and as a matter of
double protection that case should be communicated to the proper authorities
including the family members as soon as possible. The medications, which are
prescribed the doctor, should be given without missing any dose. The
physicians should always be in constant touch and the nurse should
communicate his day-to-day progress to the doctor. Most of the time the
patient is not educated enough and in such case he should be educated for
the precautions, medication and other related matters about the diseases.
The adolescent in L.A. are also facing a very grave problem i.e. smoking and
the use of alcohol. There is a need to teach the nurse of that area to have
the first hand knowledge of dealing with the drug, tobacco or smoking
problem of the people who are way less in age to comprehend the disastrous
implications of the drug or smoke they are using. Television is airing one
shocking documentary after another on drugs, while magazines are repeatedly
featuring the grim and stark imagery of crack and smack on their covers,
which is misleading and attar ting the teenager and adolescents towards this
menace. The front covers as well as the back covers are featuring
attractive, glossy ads for cigarettes and alcoholic beverages. The effect of
this media hype is that teenagers believe that illegal drugs are the best
way of having fun and they do not understand that it may become a very quick
source of premature death in the society. This is a fact that “cigarettes
kill as many Americans in a single day as cocaine does in a year. We need to
train our nurses so that they may save as many lives as possible b using
their experience, as all the patients will eventually come under their
supervision for treatment. We need a professionally experienced person to
deal with the job and especially when the patients are small children or
adolescents. Tobacco use and alcohol misuse has become a very big issue in
the U.S. and almost all of Europe. It is not only a problem of the advanced
country but it has also effected the countries with less or even very
marginal income. The nurses can play a very important role in combating with
the drugs and tobacco issues. The main thing, which is needed, is good and
sound education and a lot of dedication and concern, as they will be dealing
with the diseases, which are directly affecting the small children. A
qualified nurse practitioner is a registered nurse and with the advanced
knowledge and training in nursing she has the ability to take care of the
problems of the adolescents who were abused by alcohol or tobacco. These
nurses are engaged in two jobs at one time. One is to promote health and the
other is to prevent disease. Since the conditions of the teenagers or
adolescents calls for prevention as well as cure, so these are the best
available professionals.
Advancement of Nursing Science
This course provides the opportunity for graduate nursing students to study
the connections between philosophy, concepts, theories, research, and
advanced nursing practice. Examination of major philosophies illustrates the
influences on nursing and health care. The development of concepts related
to health care is examined with beginning experience in concept analysis.
Models and theories that direct and guide practice are applied. The
importance of research and its link to nursing science is addressed.
Research in Nursing Practice
This course explores the interconnectedness of nursing theory, nursing
research, and nursing practice. Concepts related to the philosophy of
science and generation of knowledge is examined. Both qualitative and
quantitative approaches to the research process are encouraged. Clinical
projects designed to demonstrate the interrelationship of theory, research,
and practice, and which relate to the area of health promotion, is
addressed. An action plan is developed to serve as the application phase of
the research process. Research utilization and dissemination in advanced
practice are discussed. Ways to incorporate clinically based research are
investigated.
Child Development and Assessment
This course focuses on advanced comprehensive physical, psychosocial,
developmental, and cultural assessment of the child within the context of
his/her family and community. Determination of the health status of children
from infancy to adolescence through evaluation of a variety of data
collection techniques is stressed. Analysis and interpretation of growth and
development patterns are discussed as they relate to primary care. The
clinical laboratory component enables the student to refine health
assessment skills.
Primary Care I
This course focuses on providing primary care to infants, children, and
adolescents using a life span approach. Health promotion and disease
prevention are stressed. Assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute
episodic illnesses and stable chronic health conditions are emphasized.
Concepts of epidemiology are explored and applied. Aspects of differential
diagnosis are addressed. The student applies health promotion, disease
prevention, and illness management strategies to clients. Theory-based
models are addressed as they pertain to the primary care of children.
The nurses should have the following mission statement that they will follow
the American Nurses Association and the guidelines provided by them. That
the faculties and graduates will be termed as qualified to take care and
manage of the problems faced by the adolescents of L.A. They will consult,
collaborate and will seek general supervision from a physician. They will
not only provide primary health care, but also help in ambulatory care
facilities. The emphasis will be on clinical decision-making,
problem-solving, leadership and primary care delivery sills. The role of FNP
will be very significant.
