Writing Compare and Contrast Essays

In comparison, writer compares two or more things, events, ideas to distinguish similarities between them while in contrast writer finds out the differences among them. It is the process of creating evaluating and analyzing the findings and then presenting it in a meaningful, interesting and logical manner. These essays go beyond the simple description and give deep information on the compared/ contrast items. It identifies the meaningful relationships between them and identifies the significant qualities.

• You should write quotations or any other interesting story to support your statement as valid argument.
• To give a reader clear picture of your essay, remember to link your investigation to thesis.
• You should not forget to concentrate on the main objective of compare/contrast essay. It’s imperative to have main purpose of essay in mind.
• To have better understanding on the subject matter of compare and contrast essay, you must ask the question like how? Who? Where? What? Why? And explore its answers.
• Make sure you give equal points on comparison and contrast in your essay.
• At least three compare and contrast should be given with quoted example.
• Listing similarities first and then differences will leave a negative impact. It must not be into mechanical action
• You must think with every perspective, planning is important because it gives a clear picture and thus you must give full attention to even smallest details.
• One of the methods of comparison and contrast is the use of Venn diagram. It is basically the overlapping of different circles which represent some event or idea that you have researched. This diagram allows you to compare and contrast two or more things or events.
• Your essay should be in the MLA or APA format, as proper citation will be your evidences and you would not be able to convince reader without it
